Until recently, I never really ate acai berry. When it became a 'thing' a couple of years back, the hype surrounding it as a superfood actually put me off. And being the super-edgy hipster that I am, I refused to follow the trend and just disregarded it as some sort of fad. I took pride in the fact I had not join Instagram's acai berry bowl cult.
However if you read my previous post about my Yoga retreat you'll know that I have recently (and openly) admitted to under-valuing the importance of micronutrients and only focusing on my calories. This has left me lacking in those vitamins and minerals, those vitamins and minerals which are essential for overall good health.. and acai berry is quite literally packed with them.
Anyway after the retreat in June, an entire seven days of fresh, nutrient-dense food, I decided to keep feeding my body with the good stuff and haven't looked back since. So when Sambazon approached me and challenged me to 14 days of acai berry-ness, I accepted. Something of which I probably wouldn't have done 6 months ago.
So what does 14 days of acai berry-ness involve? A lot of banana and a lot of blending. I played it safe for the first few days by just adding a frozen acai sachet into my protein smoothies. It was super simple, took little to no effort - and I was basically super charging my normal shakes. On day 5 I made the worlds best smoothie ever* so I've popped it at the bottom of this post.
When I reached the end of my first week I decided now was the time to make my first EVER acai berry bowl. Although my first attempt was pretty traumatising. Despite follow a recipe, the texture separated and could only be likened to infant vomit. I tried to trick my housemate into trying it before I proceeded to throw it away. (She didn't). However take 2... take 2 was just wonderful.
I also got a bit creative a made some supa supaaa fancy acai berry frozen yoghurt pops. As soon as I got that Instagram shot and put my white board away, I demolished two in a row.
By the end of my two weeks I was feeling pretty fantastic. Before I tried Sambazon I expected acai to taste quite bitter but its the entire opposite. It's so deliciously sweet and has such a fruity flavour. I can't describe it well enough to do it justice so I highly recommend you go and source some yourself.
Although some days I definitely emptied full size packets of smarties on top of my smoothie bowls (I'm still learning okay?), my mind has definitely been opened. Don't be fooled though, despite many claims, acai isn't some magic food that makes your lose weight or transforms you into a health goddess - a calorie deficit and a varied, balanced diet will do this for you. But what I will say is this - Sambazon tastes bloody amazing and if you don't try it for the insane volume of antioxidants, try it for the flavour. Your taste buds will thank you.
